| Welcome to Stone Gate Farm Stone Gate Farm is located on 93 acres of rolling farm land in Columbiana County in Northeast Ohio click here for map & directions. It is the home of the Smith family: David, Jackie, their two sons, Kyle & Kevin and various cats, dogs and of course horses. Dave is a graduate of OSU School of Veterinary Medicine and is a solo practioner of a large animal (primarily bovine & equine) practice based out of our farm. Although Dave grew up working on his grandfather’s dairy farm his interest & his work with horses has developed over the years. No doubt being married to a horse crazy person had some impact on this transformation. The practice is primarily a mobile practice; however, after the completion of the new building, he will also have a treatment area on the farm. This area will allow people to bring their horses for routine dental work or emergencies that can be better handled in a treatment area rather in the field. Since Dave is a ‘farm boy’ at heart; he spends all his free time playing on the farm. He puts up several acres of alfalfa hay every year and is always finding projects for one of his ‘big toys’. At last count there were 8 ponds and there has been drain tile installed just about everywhere it may be needed. On top of all of that, he also builds all the cross country jumps on the farm for the various competitions held at the farm. When asked if Dave rides; the answer is that the he rides his Japanese Pony, his Suzuki dirt bike. He says, “you don’t have to clean up after it and it doesn’t eat very much.” Jackie is a graduate of Lake Erie College where she majored in Phys Ed and Equestrian studies. It was while she was teaching at Lake Erie College that she met Dave. An accomplished rider, competing through the CCI ** level, she is also know for many of the other hats she wears. As an official licensed with United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) she officiates at competitions throughout the country as a dressage judge or technical delegate. She is also licensed as a cross country course designer, but limits her designing to the two sites where she and Dave host events. As an organizer, Jackie is the Chairman of the United States Eventing Associations (USEA) Organizers Committee. Through that position she is also on the BOG of the USEA & on the USEF Eventing Committee. On the teaching end of things, Jackie gives lessons at the farm and is the Instructional Coordinator for the Western Reserve Pony Club, which calls Stone Gate Farm home. Recently, Jackie agreed to be the Assistant Area VIII Young Rider Coordinator. Although this is a time consuming job, it is a labor of love as helping to develop the younger riders is what it’s all about. In addition to developing the younger riders, she still enjoys bring along the younger horses as well and usually has a project of her own or of a client to keep her busy & happy. Kyle is about to complete his junior year at United High School. He is currently a C 3 Pony Club member of the Western Reserve Pony Club (planning on taking his B this summer). He had a very successful year eventing the home bred Summer’s Gift aka ‘Gus’ in 2004. They were members of the Area VIII Young Riders Team at the North American Young Riders Championships and completed in fourth place at the USEF Jr. Championships at the Mid-South Three Day Event. He and Gus are currently qualified for the NAYRC at the Intermediate level for 2005 and hope to make the team. In Aug. Kyle and 3 other riders from the United States Pony Club will be traveling as a team to the United Kingdom for a Pony Club exchange. While in the UK he will be riding and staying with other Pony Club members & their families. They will be participating in lessons and clinics that will include cross country, show jumping, polo cross, Tetrathlon, and mounted games. Needless to say, he is very excited about the trip. Kevin is just finishing up is freshman year at United High School. He is currently a C 2 Pony Club member of the Western Reserve Pony Club. Kevin also enjoys eventing and currently is competing his Little Romeo at the Training and hopes to move up to Preliminary as soon as that pesky water issue is resolved. He also enjoys show jumping & hopes go to the National Pony Club Rally in VA in show jumping. Kevin has developed a real passion for mounted games and being a member of the ‘Spitfires’ team keeps him real busy. Their team won their first open competition last fall at the North American Challenge at the Kentucky Horse Park. He and his team mates (Laura Crowl, Amanda Robb, Monica Scarsella & Devin Pingree) are planning a trip to Canada in June for another competition and international clinic. Since Kevin has developed such good vaulting skills & is use to ride ponies for games, not to mention he is still the lightest member in the family at 113lbs although he he’s 5’10”, he was elected to start a couple of ponies. The first is our 2 year old haflinger pony Sugar & a 3 year old welsh/TB pony for a friend. He’s having fun, but after riding these ponies, he can really appreciate Romeo. |
